Charges approved for slum dwellers

Mumbai: The state government on Tuesday announced that a monthly fee of Rs 100 will be collected from authorised slum dwellers from August 2002, but shelved a plan to charge dues with retrospective from January, 1995.
Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh made the announcement at a press conference after the weekly cabinet meeting. The state had earlier planned to collect charges on photo-passes-which establish that the legality of a slum dwelling--with retrospective effect from January 1, 1995, at the rate of Rs 100.
However, the proposal was met with stiff opposition not only from the Shiv Sena-BJP but also by the Congress party. "Slum dwellers possessing 225 sq ft dwellings will now have to pay Rs 100 per month, while those occupying a greater area will have to pay Rs one for every extra sq ft in Mumbai," Mr Deshmukh said. Hutment dwellers in other parts of the state would have to pay 25 paise more if they are holding more space than 225 sq feet, he added.
