Cops were biased, say Muslims

Mumbai: A delegation of Muslims from Dhule met senior home department officials at Mantralaya on Tuesday to complain about the partisan role of the police in the communal riots which claimed 10 lives last month.

The meeting was held at the office of senior Congress leader and dairy development minister Anees Ahmed. Additional chief secretary (home) Chitkala Zutshi and principal secretary (home) A V Parasnis were also present at the meeting.

In the meanwhile, Anjali Iyer, a lawyer representing Sabhir Sheikh, one of the accused picked up by the police in connection with the riots, has filed an application under Right To Information (RTI) Act, seeking information about the number of cases filed by the police against her client. “I have to file the RTI as police is not ready to reveal the number of cases registered against my client,’’ Iyer said.

The state government has ordered a probe by a high-level committee into the riots. The state deputy chief minister R R Patil said, “If needed, a judicial probe would also be conducted.’’ From police action, it was evident that people from both communities had been arrested, he added. Patil refuted the allegations of the police being biased.
