NAGAPATTINAM: Enmity
arising out of allocation of permanent houses to tsunami victims led to
the murder of an AIADMK unit chief on Saturday night.
Police arrested a CPI member in connection with the murder while search
is on for another person. Murugaiyan (58), son of Pethaan of Vedaranyam
Kollitheevu area, was serving as the AIADMK unit chief of ward 5.
In Kollitheevu, a service organisation had constructed 80 permanent
houses for the tsunami victims. Of these, 78 houses were distributed by
the government to the beneficiaries.
The remaining two houses became a bone of contention between Murugaiyan
and CPI leaders of the same area S.Panchanathan (28) and K.Dharmarajan.
On Saturday, Murugaiyan was returning home after attending a function
at a temple, when a gang reportedly surrounded him and hacked him to
death. A severely injured Murugaiyan died within hours though he was
admitted to Vedaranyam Government Hospital.
Murugaiyan is survived by wife and three sons. Vedaranyam police are
investigating.
