Conference "Education and Training for Sustainable Built Environment (SBE)"
3-4 October, 2005

Introduction

In almost all European Universities and schools of architecture and town and country planning,  departments, architectural studios or courses have started focusing on sustainable  development programs, either specifically for the European context, or developing from existing structures that worked in the international cooperation policy sector. Themes like bioclimatic building, conservation of heritage, eco-tourism, appropriate technologies, low-cost housing , good governance and participatory planning ,urban and environmental design,...are organised at master training level, post-diploma specialisation or doctorate programmes.

Research lines are also active in  these fields, encouraged by governments, European commission or European sicence foundations.

The two major groups of instituions -those who work on European problems and those working on third world issues - have quite different approaches, based on the various economic, technologic and cultural contexts, in spite of the so-called globalisation.
